Cape York Australia is one of the country’s last pioneering frontiers. In fact, until a little over 100 years ago only Indigenous Australians enjoyed this unique paradise. The quest to conquer has always attracted man to the least accessible of the Earth’s surfaces, the highest mountain, the wildest desert, or the most remote. In this country, the greatest achievement is, without question, to reach the northernmost tip of Australia, Cape York.
Even today, Cape York remains a sparsely populated area that is accessible during the dry season months from May to December, and then only by 4WD vehicles for the majority of the way. That’s why Cape York 4WD tours are such a unique adventure. They allow you to see this great unspoilt and diverse part of Australia and its wildlife and birdlife up close.
To stand at the very tip of Australia where oceans meet and overlook the sheltered and unspoilt Torres Strait Islands, is indeed a truly awe inspiring and overwhelming experience. We invite you to join us and come exploring on one of our fantastic Cape York adventures.
Cape York Australia is a large tract of largely unpopulated land, which covers the far northern part of Queensland. It includes ‘the tip’, an iconic landmark which is Australia’s most northern point, overlooking the nearby Torres Strait Islands.
Mostly flat, much of Cape York’s landscape has been left as it was for hundreds of thousands of years, except for several large cattle stations and some small isolated communities. It includes the historic township of Cooktown, which is a 3.5 hour drive from Cairns, and Weipa which is a bauxite mining community.
At its widest point, Cape York Peninsula is 430km across, which is from the Bloomfield River on its eastern coastline to Kowanyama on the west coast. It’s 660km ‘tall’ from the southern border of the Cook Shire to the tip. Roads of varying quality criss-cross Cape York. 4WD is the recommended mode of transport. There’s several remote air strips, the largest of which is serviced daily in Weipa.

“We have just returned from the camping safari trip to the northern tip of Australia. Returned by Trinity Bay cargo ship to cairns. We enjoyed the whole experience , especially commending the care by driver and host Rick and culinary skills and general knowledge of Chris . Very happy to recommend this trip. Our first group tour in Australia proved to be very worthwhile. ”

“16 days from Darwin really was an experience we shall not forget (at 80 years on) Chris and John must be the best shots ever and the cooking _ wonderful. Weather was rather over hot for means we would have preferred an earlier date, also the camping got a bit wearing, not that we minded being out in atent a all. Perhaps we shall go motels to cape York _ back cable style sounds really good. If you haven't done an OzT our then you MUST.”

“We have done 4 trips with Oz Tours since 2009 and highly recommend this company for those on a budget who want to see remote parts of Australia in the company of like-minded travellers. 3 of the trips (Kimberley, Townsville to Adelaide and Central Australia Desert Safari) were hosted by 2 of the "gems" of Australian outback travel, John and Chris. They are a very professional couple who really enhance every trip with their insights about geography and history of the areas in which we are travelling. The 4th trip to Cape York (all overland) was also a wonderful experience as we traversed the Peninsula to see many sights that other tours may miss. We are presently planning our 5th trip with Oz. ”

“Lorraine Hill actually. Poor Ron stayed at home and missed a wonderful trip which was motel accommodation to the top of Cape York then a cargo ship back to Cairns. What an adventure. I was with the first tour to go up the Cape since the wet season at the beginning of May. Accommodation even though the area is very isolated was fantastic (especially Punsand Bay) Food great and plenty of it even on the cargo ship. The guide, named Hirani was very knowledgeable about the area and had some great stories. She is an excellent driver and managed to drive our 4x4 bus over some pretty bad roads. Yes I made the walk to the top with help from Hirani and one of my fellow travellers. I would encourage anyone to do this trip even if travelling alone as I was. Oz Tours made this trip one to be remembered forever. ”
